"There was no way to know there was more than one...I did what I said I would...I killed the damn thing. I came home. In less than an hour. But there was more than one..."
He rolled onto his side, sort of curling up. "I'm sorry, Lynn. I'm sorry. I should have listened to you. I just thought I could do something good for once, and that's all I could think of."

The cat girl rolled her eyes.
"You're moping, Bastian. You're acting just like a kit who got his favorite yarn ball taken away." Aislynn gave his back a look, then rested her head on her paws. The tip of her tail twitched again, a sign of life that went along with the steady rising and falling of her sides.
She didn't like seeing him like this, but she didn't feel like going up to comfort him. That was what he wanted, after all; he wanted someone to go over to him and tell him everything would be okay. Well, she had learned a long time ago that not everything turned out okay. Life royally sucked, actually.

"No, I'm not. I'm acting like the sorry bastard that almost got not only himself, but the love of his life and maybe countless others killed...So of course I feel like shit."
He curled up tighter, ignoring the pain in his chest that it caused. The stress made his head hurt, and he could tell she wasn't going to comfort him. This time, he was on his own. His aura wrapped around him, like a shadowy, semi-transparent blanket of sorts. It helped, but not a lot. "I'm sorry. If I could take it back I would. But I can't. Sorry's the best I can do."

Aislynn sighed, reaching up to paw at her head. "You're still complaining," she murmured, shaking her head, "You can't take this shit back, and I know that; you know that. So now we're just going to have to get over it."
Well, by that, she meant she was going to have to get over it, but Aislynn really didn't feel like it at the moment. Yeah, it hurt her to see Dusk like that. She didn't like seeing him in pain; it made her feel really bad. But she had too much pride to go over there and comfort her. She just... couldn't force herself to do it.
The damned cat wouldn't let her.
"Get some sleep, Bastian. You need your rest."

He sat up. "All I wanted to hear was that you forgive me. That's all I've asked...all I wanted you to say...but apparently I don't deserve that either...." He wiped his eyes and rolled to his feet. "Maybe...maybe I need you right now. But the one person who cares doesn't anymore..."
He walked outside, sitting on the swing, just staring out into the dead of the night. Miles away, a monster roared. And Bastian just sat there.

She just sort of sat there for a while, unsure as to what to do. She had her pride; the cat inside wanted to keep it. It didn't want her to go out there and comfort him. And maybe she didn't want to, either. She wasn't strong enough for the both of them. She could never be strong enough for the both of them.
Hell, she wasn't even strong enough for herself.
Her tail swished, a sign she was aggitated. Aislynn leapt from the chair, padding her way outside. Even as the monster roared, the girl gave no indication she had heard, merely looked around the porch. Her eyes rested on Bastian, and she gave an indignant huff. Her ears flicked.
"Remind me again why we don't have any wet cat food around this place?" She asked, sitting; her tail wrapped around her paws. "Because I really don't want to go across the street to the crazy lady's house. The dog keeps eyeing me."

"You never asked," he said simply, not even looking at her right now. He was more torn apart inside than anyone could ever do to him outside. Compared to this, that rip in his chest had felt good. His aura wrapped around him, and soon what little shadows showed did the same.
He stared out into the distance. Normally he was the strong one. The rock of the pair. The foundation. But the pillar was crumbling, and there was nothing to lean on. Nothing to even be with him. "What happens then?" he found himself asking out loud. "What happens when the strength crumbles and has no support?"

Her ears twitched once, and Aislynn let out a little sigh. "The ceiling comes crashing down," she said simply, looking over at him, "And trapping everyone inside beneath a giant pile rubble. And then you can either suffocate, or crawl out from under the rubble a little bit stronger." A shoulder rose and fell in a half shrug.
She really didn't know what else to say. She didn't care to apologize. What did she have to apologize for? And why did she have to forgive him? Most men would have shrugged off her cold rebuttle like nothing. Then again, Bastian certainly wasn't most men.

He stood up. He was feeling cold, but on the inside. Like his heart had been ripped out. "Our ceiling's caved in. You crawled out..." He choked on this next part. "Thanks for watching me suffocate..."
He started down the stairs. He didn't know where he was going. He just had to go somewhere. He didn't want to feel like this, but the one person he expected to help...the one person he thought WOULD help...didn't. He heard another faint roar in the distance and figured he'd go that way...

"Bastian Reynolds, if you go anywhere near that damned roar, I'm going to have to show you what these fucking claws can do."
Aislynn was no longer in domestic feline morph; instead, she had changed in a full-out silver tiger. Her claws dug into the wood of the porch. A dark, rumbling sound came from deep within her chest. She certainly wasn't happy with him. That much was obvious.
She started down from the porch, her heavy paws making no sound as she did so. Tigers were beasts of prey; the only noise they made was silence. And that was a good thing, because she had a feeling she was going to need silence for this.

"You've already clawed my heart out figuratively...why not literally?" he spat. "This is hard for me...I fucked up. I needed forgiveness. I didn't get it. I needed comfort. I didn't get it. I needed help. I didn't get it...I needed you and you pushed me away. What if I had done that to you, huh? I've given so much...and the one time I need you..."
He broke down in sobs. "I thought you cared for me. Guess that means I'm 0 for two on the thinking thing tonight." He stared in the direction of the roar. "Fucking try to do the right thing..." He could have easily slipped into a shadow and gotten away. But....he didn't want to. Honestly he didn't know what he wanted anymore.

Aislynn let out a fierce roar, launching herself at him. Her paws landed on his shoulders, intending to push him down onto the ground; her claws weren't out. She wasn't trying to hurt him, just get his attention. A low, quiet growl rumbled in her throat again.
"I tried to show you I cared, and when I did, you shoved me away to go fight those monsters. Those... things almost took you away from me once, and when I tell you to go and get some damned rest, you end up turning your back on me to go fight them.
"Am I not worth your time, Bastian? Is that why you ignore my advice? Am I not the one you want to return to when you're done with your attempt at hero'ing?" Her voice was more animalistic than human now, but the pain was obvious. "Because I can leave, if that's how you feel. You can go find some woman who cares enough for you to go let you do whatever the fuck you want whenever you want."

He fell to the ground, but melded into the shadow and popped up in front of her. "I THOUGHT THERE WAS ONE. It was an easy kill." His eyes turned cold. "You have no problem doing whatever the fuck you want. But did I push YOU away the night you got raped? NO! I was THERE for you. I got my ass kicked. FOR YOU. Every problem you found yourself in, I was right there. FOR YOU. The time I get myself into trouble, you rub my face in it. If THAT'S what I get in return....I'd rather have gotten eaten."

When he popped up in front of her, Aislynn hissed and scurried back.
"Then go get yourself eaten, if that'll make you feel better. I'm sorry if I'm not strong enough for you, Bastian. I barely have enough strength to make it through the day. Hell, some nights I have to sleep by you just to feel like I can make it through the night." Her fur was bristled now, but her eyes were pained and hurt.
"I can't believe you would bring that up..." She whispered, referring to the night Switchblade had brutally stolen her innocence, "Of all things, you had to bring that up. Do you know what that did to me? Do you know how disgusting I felt, even days later?" The tiger began to back away, feeling the tears and pain start to well up.
She didn't want to remember that night, and yet she couldn't stop.
"Of all the things to use against me..."

Shadows viciously danced around them. "You keep using this against me. This was my darkest hour...so what? You have your own set of rules but I have to walk a tight line? Maybe I will go get myself eaten. I love you. Like it or not." He started to walk away.
A shadow lashed out at Aislynn, and something out of the ordinary happened. There was no way Bastian could see. No way he could help. But his aura lashed out and blocked the shadow, almost completely separating itself from Bastian. For a split second--all the time this took--the aura was only barely attached to his ankles. Deep down, he still cared for her. And the aura knew it.
